Thankfully Caine and Darwin only kept them for the first two hours of the radio broadcast. He and Jude were out of the studio and on their way to lunch by half past twelve.

Both of them had been silent during the ride to Seven Fish. According to Rhett, this place was the Lobster Charlie’s of Key West, with the best fresh seafood in town. Jude liked the sound of that. He was just too damn tired to shake his pom-poms at the moment.

The restaurant had a contemporary look to the outside with a bit of art deco flare. It didn’t match up with all of the older buildings in town. Jude would say the building had no personality. That all changed when he and Cope walked inside. The place was cozy and felt a lot like Lobster Charlie’s. Couples were laughing together and having a good time.

“This is exactly what we needed.” Cope gave his hand a squeeze.

“It sure is.” Jude kept Cope’s hand in his own as the bubbly hostess showed them to their table. It was in the corner and offered a bit of privacy.

Once they’d each given their drink orders, Jude held his hand out to Cope. “Are you okay? You’re looking worn to the bone.”

“That’s how I feel. I mean, it’s not like we’re working on a chain gang or anything, but this whole situation with Casa Flores is making me feel, I don’t know, helpless?” Cope supposed that was as good a word as any to describe how he was feeling about this case.

Jude nodded. “I’m feeling a bit like that too. There’s obviously more of this story to tell. Why aren’t they telling it? Is it because Santiago won’t let them or is it something else?”

“I’ve been wondering the same thing. It could be Santiago holding them back, but he hasn’t shown up so far.”

“What does that mean?”

“Well, say you were going to tell Ronan the story about what we did the other night.” Cope meant when they went all the way for the first time, but it made him feel like a teenager putting it into those words.

Jude’s eyes glowed as if he were reliving that night. “I would never tell him that.”

“I know you wouldn’t. For the sake of the example, say you were though. If I didn’t want you to tell him, I might kick you under the table or shoot you a death stare, right?”

“Yeah or you’d use one of your spells to turn me into toad.” Jude winked.

A broad grin broke across Cope’s face. “There is that. Point of the matter is that I would do whatever I could to shut you up. I would imagine Santiago would do the same thing. Those women admitted to murdering him and watching him die.”

“What if Santiago wants the story to come out?” Jude’s brow furrowed. “All we’ve heard about Casa Flores since we got here has been rumor and gossip passed down over the last century. The only real truth we know is that all three of them ended up dead well before their time.
